Writing Experience
Shaina Thomas is a proud Tulsa, Oklahoma native of the United States who grew up on the northern side of the historic city. Since her experience within north-Tulsa schools and navigating Tulsa neighborhoods throughout her childhood, Thomas remains a Black Wall Street enthusiast and educator. She is currently residing in the Nation's capital, Washington, D.C., as she continues her doctoral research at Howard University.
Shaina's early life consisted of 90's R&B, a rise in Black cinema, Tupac Shakur's declarations for the condition of Black folks' (while navigating the complex conditioning of generational poverty), occasional family barbecues and summer trips to Red Bird, Oklahoma visiting her Grandmother Loretta's along with her siblings.

Referred to as "Nosey-Rosey" by her mother, at the age of 10, roughly a month shy of her 11th birthday, Shaina lost her mother, Paula Annette Middleton, after a strong battle with cancer. Encountering unique family dynamics, Shaina found refuge in the power of storytelling. Walking to local libraries, Shaina would spend hours of the day reading novels she could not take home - until a librarian offered to give her a library card without having to fill out a form signed by a parent or guardian. Whom, by the age of thirteen, she and her siblings did not have.
Gaining access to a variety of works written by Black authors was only the beginning of Shaina's journey. It was not before long that she began to see herself becoming a future author of her own titles. At the age of 12, she had already begun to develop short stories and dreamt of writing romance novels and a novel about the resiliency of her siblings and herself navigating the world as undocumented orphans. Later, she realized that a novel about the Tulsa Race Riot/Massacre of 1921 must come first. Though it took her years after committing to pursuing higher education with the help of being awarded the academic Gates Millennium Scholarship, Shaina was able to publish the debut novel of her dreams in April 2018. Today, she continues developing creative projects celebrating the legacy of lived experiences across generations. She also serves within curriculum development teams to ensure quality representation of Black people and their contributions throughout the development of civilizations.
